What is the Stallion Subscription Fee?

  • The Stallion Subscription fee is precisely what it says - a subscription fee. It is required for each year that you wish to have your Stallion in the program. It is also a prepayment of the minimum number of mares. The Stallion Subscription fee is $1,250 ($125 x 10).

What is the minimum number of mares?

  • The minimum number of mares is 10 for each breeding season. Those 10 mares are paid in the Subscription Fee so if you do not breed more than the minimum there is no additional fee.

How do I sign up my Stallion?

  • If you have never signed up a Stallion before, you need to fill out the Stallion Owner Contract (including the Stallion Subscription Form) and send it in to the office. If you have a Stallion Owner Contract on file, you only need to send in the Stallion Subscription Form.

What if I have a Stallion Owner Contract on file and want to add another Stallion?

  • You only need one Stallion Owner Contract so if you want to add another Stallion all you need is the Stallion Subscription Form and the Stallion Subscription fee.

What is the Stallion Subscription Form used for?

  • Each year in October, Stallion Owners subscribe their Stallion for the following breeding year. The Stallion Subscription Form along with the Stallion Subscription fee enrolls that Stallion for that year.

How much does it cost?

How much is due in December?

  • At the end of the breeding season (Dec 1st) you send a copy of the Stallion Report or a Stallion Declaration Form to the BI office. If you bred less than the minimum number of mares there is nothing else due. If you bred more than the minimum number of mares you must also send a check for the mares in excess of the minimum.

What if I bred more than 80 mares?

  • The maximum you pay for is 80 mares. So if you bred more than 80 you would deduct the Stallion Subscription fee from the maximum amount ($10,000) and pay the difference which would be $8,750.

What happens if I pay for a mare that I thought was in foal but absorbs or aborts?

  • If you pay for a mare that turns out not to be in foal, all you need to do is notify the BI office in writing and you will be sent a full refund ($125). Remember that is subject to the minimum and maximum fee. That means if you bred 2 mares more than the minimum number of mares and 3 of those mares did not produce a foal, you would only be refunded for two mares. Also if you bred 85 mares and 3 of those did not produce a foal, you would not be entitled to a refund.

Why do I need to pay the Stallion Subsciption fee in October for the following breeding year?

  • Many mare owners will not breed to a Stallion that is not subscribed to the BI and most mare owners make their breeding decisions during the winter so we want to be able to let them know who has subscribed. It is definitely to your advantage to be subscribed early.

What is the Stallion Declaration Form used for?

  • The Stallion Owner Declaration Form was designed for those Stallion Owners who prefer not to handle the Certficates of Invitation. If you send the Stallion Owner Declaration Form in lieu of the Stallion Report, no Certificates will be sent to you. Any Certificates would be generated individually by request and sent out from the BI office.

What are the Certficates of Invitation for?

  • The BI Certificates of Invitation are generated from the Stallion Reports and act as proof of eligibility for those foals to compete in the BI Derby when they are four years old. Even though they are no longer a requirement many mare owners consider them extremely important.

What if I want to change my Stallion's photo?

  • Any time you would like to change the photo of your Stallion that displays on the website, just email a new hi-res photo to the BI office and it will be updated.
